Image-maker Joe Black's, 'Made in China' & 'Carry Your Own Sins Missy'

Joe Black's giant piece entitled 'Made in China'. Produced using more than 5500 toy soldiers, this portrait is of a Chinese soldier boy taken by photographer Robert Capa. The original image was used on the front cover of LIFE magazine in January 1938 to cover the Sino Japanese War. The toy soldiers are manufactured in China, hence the title.

About: Born 1973, studied as a sculptor and then moved in to illustration and worked for many years as a successful commercial artist.

Now focused solely on his personal artwork, Joe Black does not refer to himself as an artist but considers himself an image-maker. Combining his love of materials with his craft, skills, technique and a passion for perfection, each piece is painstakingly created using thousand upon thousand of ball bearings, plastic pins, badges or Lego Bricks. He will use pretty much anything small enough to build his large images creating vast tonal effects. The materials he uses often plays tribute to the iconic imagery it makes up.

(Above) 'Carry Your Own Sins Missy' 1478 handmade badges of collected imagery, from Elvis and Disney cartoons to the Vietnam War. The iconic image of Captain America encapsulates the idea of America as the hero nation. However, within the image we glimpse the conflicts and contradictions of the all American dream.

Anthony Lister on film

New footage of Anthony Lister breaking down his position in the art world and what inspires him to paint.

'Arrested Motion photographer and filmmaker Carlos Gonzalez brings you a new video in which he interviews Australian-born artist Anthony Lister. Documenting the artist’s multiple visits to the city of Los Angeles for exhibitions (HVW8New Image Art) & street work during the last 9 months, this video sheds light on not only the artwork created by Lister, but it also brings to the surface his views on topics such as street art, technique and the themes pushing his artwork forward. In doing so, the footage sheds light on Aussie painter’s experiences in LA by perhaps showing a side of him that’s rarely seen.'

Solo exhibition by Patricia Waller 'Broken Heros'

The knitted sculpture "Spiderman" by Patricia Waller, featuring the comic book character as an imprisoned victim of his own web.

The knitted sculpture "Hello Kitty," featuring the cartoon character as a harakiri ritual suicide victim.

Patricia Waller's Broken Heros show at Deschler Gallery (Berlin) is a bloody affair. All of her 'pop culture' sculptures are made from crocheted wool to offset the dark themes that they address. The show is on now and runs until 30th June. Here's the blurb:

'The figures populating Patricia Waller’s new series “Broken Heroes” are all well-known icons of pop culture, they are creatures of comics, cartoons, TV shows and similar products of our contemporary collective consciousness. And as is so often the case with Waller’s output, the works are funny and amusing at first glance, for they present these “heroes” in a manner not seen before: Ernie as a drunk bum with his yellow rubber ducky, Spiderman hopelessly entangled in his own net, and Sponge Bob as suicide bomber with enough explosives strapped around his body to lay a city block to waste. The comic effect is enhanced by the fact that these works are all crocheted. Our laughter, however, soon turns into discomfort on closer inspection—again a typical phenomenon in encountering Waller’s objects. Clumsy Spiderman might seem droll, but the sight of a raped and bleeding Minnie Mouse is no longer funny. The homeliness of the technique can disguise the underlying seriousness of the themes but for a brief moment.'

Batman 'Arkham City' illustrations by Dave Wilkins

'My first encounter with fantasy art was Frazetta's Death Dealer, that was the first spark. A steady diet of Marvel Comics, Godzilla movies, and inspiration from iconic artists like Simon Bisley, Frank Miller, the path was set, although not immediate. Working odd jobs over the years, and drawing in his spare time; my first professional work didn't come until his late 20's. Working as a bouncer in Southern California, I took a second job at Kinko's to have access to a computer; at the time I didn't own one. Teaching himself Photoshop after hours and during lunch breaks, scanning in his drawings and learning to color and render.
Opportunity met preparation when a rep from Midway Entertainment saw his work up on the monitors, and a month later he was working in the gaming industry. I currently works as a concept artist in films and games, I am also a professional comic artist working for Marvel Comics, and a member of Atlanta based HeadHunta' Studios along with other industry members Nathan Massengill, Koi Turnbull, and Tony Washington, too name a few.'

Custom toys by James Fuller AKA Fuller Designs

Above shows Fuller's latest custom entitled 'Rebel Western'.
Fuller writes: "This was a commission. The client wanted his rebel ink to have an Ole Western Indian feel. The only requirement was to use red, black, gray and white. This is my interpretation."

James Fuller writes:

'Hello. My name is James Fuller.

I've been into art pretty much my whole life. From drawing Spiderman on the bottom of my mom's coffee table at the age of four - to working in the
graphic design field as an adult.

I've been customizing toys for over three years now and have enjoyed every minute of it. I strive to make each piece better than the next, to continue to learn, and try new things.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my site and works. Hopefully you like what you see.

Best regards,
Fuller
