Image-maker Joe Black's, 'Made in China' & 'Carry Your Own Sins Missy'
Joe Black's giant piece entitled 'Made in China'. Produced using more than 5500 toy soldiers, this portrait is of a Chinese soldier boy taken by photographer Robert Capa. The original image was used on the front cover of LIFE magazine in January 1938 to cover the Sino Japanese War. The toy soldiers are manufactured in China, hence the title.
About: Born 1973, studied as a sculptor and then moved in to illustration and worked for many years as a successful commercial artist.
Now focused solely on his personal artwork, Joe Black does not refer to himself as an artist but considers himself an image-maker. Combining his love of materials with his craft, skills, technique and a passion for perfection, each piece is painstakingly created using thousand upon thousand of ball bearings, plastic pins, badges or Lego Bricks. He will use pretty much anything small enough to build his large images creating vast tonal effects. The materials he uses often plays tribute to the iconic imagery it makes up.
(Above) 'Carry Your Own Sins Missy' 1478 handmade badges of collected imagery, from Elvis and Disney cartoons to the Vietnam War. The iconic image of Captain America encapsulates the idea of America as the hero nation. However, within the image we glimpse the conflicts and contradictions of the all American dream.

The art of Chris Jones
Chris Jones creates sculptures composed of fragmented images from magazines and used books that are beautiful, frightening, and exquisitely detailed: a macabre headless horse, a 19th century stagecoach, a disheveled TV.
For his recent solo show at Marc Straus, Jones worked in New York and was interested in the history of the Lower Eastside and this specific gallery space. Based on his impressions, he created a fantastical trading post replete with sundry items such as shovels, bear heads, and lamps echoing this area’s early 19th century and this building’s evolution from a tenement to a store for varied immigrant trades. It is also an homage to THE STORE that Claes Oldenburg opened nearby in 1961, selling his food-like handmade Paper Mache objects.
Jones’ work mimics the way in which we assimilate and process the world using our own personal histories and memories as a base to develop new connections. Jones has called on his own memories (through an art historic lens) and the viewers are in turn prompted to call upon their past to create their own personal stories as they relate to these wondrous pieces.

Solo exhibition by Patricia Waller 'Broken Heros'

The knitted sculpture "Spiderman" by Patricia Waller, featuring the comic book character as an imprisoned victim of his own web.
The knitted sculpture "Hello Kitty," featuring the cartoon character as a harakiri ritual suicide victim.
Patricia Waller's Broken Heros show at Deschler Gallery (Berlin) is a bloody affair. All of her 'pop culture' sculptures are made from crocheted wool to offset the dark themes that they address. The show is on now and runs until 30th June. Here's the blurb:
'The figures populating Patricia Waller’s new series “Broken Heroes” are all well-known icons of pop culture, they are creatures of comics, cartoons, TV shows and similar products of our contemporary collective consciousness. And as is so often the case with Waller’s output, the works are funny and amusing at first glance, for they present these “heroes” in a manner not seen before: Ernie as a drunk bum with his yellow rubber ducky, Spiderman hopelessly entangled in his own net, and Sponge Bob as suicide bomber with enough explosives strapped around his body to lay a city block to waste. The comic effect is enhanced by the fact that these works are all crocheted. Our laughter, however, soon turns into discomfort on closer inspection—again a typical phenomenon in encountering Waller’s objects. Clumsy Spiderman might seem droll, but the sight of a raped and bleeding Minnie Mouse is no longer funny. The homeliness of the technique can disguise the underlying seriousness of the themes but for a brief moment.'

'A Feeling of Transience' an upcoming solo exhibition of sculpture by J.Shea at Hellion Gallery

Boston native and current Portland resident, Jshea creates sculptures from the small discarded parts of forgotten gadgets and cultural icons.
This collection of artwork contains narratives that are continuously moving. Temporary and un-rooted, the subjects constantly adapt to new environments, situations, and acquaintances. Each piece evokes a momentary feeling by its nature, with the work always changing, reacting and transforming. The artist explores both the human figure and the animal form, at times morphing the two together in a unique style of mixed media.

Giles Walker's 'the Last Supper' opens this weekend @ Black Rat Projects, London
Giles Walker's Last Supper
'On Saturday 24th March Black Rat will be hosting the preview of Giles Walker’s extraordinary Last Supper. A year in the making this remarkable work is a fully animated sculpture consisting of thirteen mechanical figures who interact around a table. Simultaneously humorous and frightening The Last Supper surpasses the audience’s initial interest in the robotic elements of the piece and draws us into the questions it poses and the all too human aspects it addresses. It promises to leave a lasting impression on those who have the opportunity to experience it.
The gallery will be open between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 24th March and we strongly recommend you make time to come and experience The Last Supper. The exhibition will continue for two weeks. Look forward to seeing you.
Best wishes, BRP.'

The work of Greg Brotherton
'With a consuming drive to build things that often escalate in complexity as they take shape, Greg’s work is compulsive. Working with hammer-formed steel and re-purposed objects, his themes tend to be mythological in nature, revealed through a dystopian view of pop culture.'

'Cause & Effect' installation by artist Do Ho Suh @ Western Washington University
Western Washington University: "'Cause & Effect’ evokes a vicious tornado. This vast ceiling installation is a composition of densely hung strands that anchor thousands of figures clad in colors resembling a Doppler reading stacked atop one another,” said Do Ho Suh, adding that the artwork is a “physical realization of existence, suggesting strength in the presence of numerous individuals. The work is an attempt to decipher the boundaries between a single identity and a larger group, and how the two conditions coexist.”
Cause & Effect is still being installed and will be open to view in June of this year
