Coverage of Ian Francis' recent show at Lazarides Gallery (Rathbine Place), '10 000 Years From Now'

Loads more images of Ian Francis' show via Arrested Motion. I have only just learnt that Ian works/lives in Clifton, Bristol (U.K). This is awesome because thats exactly where Streets of Beige broadcast from! He lives just around the corner from S.O.B towers! We even share the same local fish & chip shop. Looks like he's just found himself a new stalker...

Show runs: 27th April 2012 - 24th May 2012 @ Lazarides Gallery, London

Image-maker Joe Black's, 'Made in China' & 'Carry Your Own Sins Missy'

Joe Black's giant piece entitled 'Made in China'. Produced using more than 5500 toy soldiers, this portrait is of a Chinese soldier boy taken by photographer Robert Capa. The original image was used on the front cover of LIFE magazine in January 1938 to cover the Sino Japanese War. The toy soldiers are manufactured in China, hence the title.

About: Born 1973, studied as a sculptor and then moved in to illustration and worked for many years as a successful commercial artist.

Now focused solely on his personal artwork, Joe Black does not refer to himself as an artist but considers himself an image-maker. Combining his love of materials with his craft, skills, technique and a passion for perfection, each piece is painstakingly created using thousand upon thousand of ball bearings, plastic pins, badges or Lego Bricks. He will use pretty much anything small enough to build his large images creating vast tonal effects. The materials he uses often plays tribute to the iconic imagery it makes up.

(Above) 'Carry Your Own Sins Missy' 1478 handmade badges of collected imagery, from Elvis and Disney cartoons to the Vietnam War. The iconic image of Captain America encapsulates the idea of America as the hero nation. However, within the image we glimpse the conflicts and contradictions of the all American dream.

The art of Chris Jones

Chris Jones creates sculptures composed of fragmented images from magazines and used books that are beautiful, frightening, and exquisitely detailed: a macabre headless horse, a 19th century stagecoach, a disheveled TV.
For his recent solo show at Marc Straus, Jones worked in New York and was interested in the history of the Lower Eastside and this specific gallery space. Based on his impressions, he created a fantastical trading post replete with sundry items such as shovels, bear heads, and lamps echoing this area’s early 19th century and this building’s evolution from a tenement to a store for varied immigrant trades. It is also an homage to THE STORE that Claes Oldenburg opened nearby in 1961, selling his food-like handmade Paper Mache objects.
Jones’ work mimics the way in which we assimilate and process the world using our own personal histories and memories as a base to develop new connections. Jones has called on his own memories (through an art historic lens) and the viewers are in turn prompted to call upon their past to create their own personal stories as they relate to these wondrous pieces.

Anthony Lister on film

New footage of Anthony Lister breaking down his position in the art world and what inspires him to paint.

'Arrested Motion photographer and filmmaker Carlos Gonzalez brings you a new video in which he interviews Australian-born artist Anthony Lister. Documenting the artist’s multiple visits to the city of Los Angeles for exhibitions (HVW8New Image Art) & street work during the last 9 months, this video sheds light on not only the artwork created by Lister, but it also brings to the surface his views on topics such as street art, technique and the themes pushing his artwork forward. In doing so, the footage sheds light on Aussie painter’s experiences in LA by perhaps showing a side of him that’s rarely seen.'

In Bed with Invader

(Space) Invader hard at work on a long 'bombing' night in Paris. It takes a special type of person to go out in the middle of the night with a ladder risking arrest. Thank goodness these people exist!

Faile on film

This is a great little documentary/interview with NY street artists Faile. I personally love the way they produce artwork. They are experimental and fun - this video is testament to that.

'Vice caught up with the Patricks (Faile) for an Art Talk about their new tile installation entitled The 104 North 7th Project in New York.'

Solo exhibition by Patricia Waller 'Broken Heros'

The knitted sculpture "Spiderman" by Patricia Waller, featuring the comic book character as an imprisoned victim of his own web.

The knitted sculpture "Hello Kitty," featuring the cartoon character as a harakiri ritual suicide victim.

Patricia Waller's Broken Heros show at Deschler Gallery (Berlin) is a bloody affair. All of her 'pop culture' sculptures are made from crocheted wool to offset the dark themes that they address. The show is on now and runs until 30th June. Here's the blurb:

'The figures populating Patricia Waller’s new series “Broken Heroes” are all well-known icons of pop culture, they are creatures of comics, cartoons, TV shows and similar products of our contemporary collective consciousness. And as is so often the case with Waller’s output, the works are funny and amusing at first glance, for they present these “heroes” in a manner not seen before: Ernie as a drunk bum with his yellow rubber ducky, Spiderman hopelessly entangled in his own net, and Sponge Bob as suicide bomber with enough explosives strapped around his body to lay a city block to waste. The comic effect is enhanced by the fact that these works are all crocheted. Our laughter, however, soon turns into discomfort on closer inspection—again a typical phenomenon in encountering Waller’s objects. Clumsy Spiderman might seem droll, but the sight of a raped and bleeding Minnie Mouse is no longer funny. The homeliness of the technique can disguise the underlying seriousness of the themes but for a brief moment.'

His latest exhibition Waiting #101 is showing until May 26th 2012 at The Outsiders Newcastle. These miniature 'waiters', inspired by Brett's signature series of 'waiting' tableux, are eminently collectible and will appeal enormously to the talented painter's throng of admirers.

Parisian provocateur Zevs creates some of our most in-demand editions. Liquidated Hammer & Sickle (Oligarch Version), limited to only ten prints, uses black gloss UV-reflective paint on matt black paper to produce a unique effect. Originally released in 2011 three have recently become available.
