New body of work from Sickboy

Wonder Club: An Exhibition of Dreams

March 17 - April 7, 2012

'White Walls is pleased to present Wonder Club,a new body of work from famed UK-artist Sickboy, uncurated by Ben Eine. The opening reception will be Saturday, March 17th, from 7-11 pm, and the exhibition is free and open to the public for viewing through April 7th, 2012.

Hot off the heels of his critically acclaimed UK solo show last November, Heaven and Earth, comes Sickboy’s first US major solo show,Wonder Club. The title refers to a meeting place in the mind of the artist, where his cryptic street messages, surreal abstraction and comical illusions all come together. Sickboy’s new works reveal inspiration drawn from anatomical studies, the age of enlightenment, romanticism, comic books and fairytales.'

'Outside In' - the story of life in the streets documentary

OUTSIDE IN: The Story of Art in the Streets from Patrick Simpson on Vimeo.

'OUTSIDE IN is a celebratory and historical look at street art through the lens of the Museum of Contemporary Art's groundbreaking exhibition Art in the Streets. The film features renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Swoon, Futura, Mister Cartoon, Revok, Martha Cooper, Invader to name a few. Director Alex Stapleton (Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel) documents the artist's creative process, their pitfalls with the law, the poetic impermanence of their craft and the artists' evolution from the back seat of a cop car to the walls of a well-respected institution.

ABOUT THE ART IN THE STREETS EXHIBITION
The Museum of Contemporary Art presents Art in the Streets, the first major U.S. museum exhibition of the history of graffiti and street art, April 17 through August 8, 2011, at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. The exhibition traces the development of graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the global movement it has become today, concentrating on key cities where a unique visual language or attitude has evolved.

Art in the Streets showcases installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists from the graffiti and street art community, including Fab 5 Freddy (New York), Lee Quiñones (New York), Futura (New York), Margaret Kilgallen (San Francisco), Swoon (New York), Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles), Os Gemeos (São Paulo), and JR (Paris). MOCA’s exhibition emphasized Los Angeles’ role in the evolution of graffiti and street art, with special sections dedicated to cholo graffiti and Dogtown skateboard culture. The exhibition featured projects by influential Los Angeles-based artists such as Craig R. Stecyk III, Chaz Bojórquez, Mister Cartoon, RETNA, SABER, REVOK, and RISK.'

Lego graffiti stop motion by Elvisistnochamleben

Generally videos of graffiti being 'thrown up' tend to be kinda tedious. I spend the whole time waiting for the money shot at the end. This one is different....this one is LEGO! Rejoice!

Shepard Fairey to appear in episode of the Simpsons

Shepard Fairey is appearing as himself in an episode of The Simpsons on March 4th.  He will feature in Episode 15 of the 23rd season, Exit Though The Kwik-E-Mart, a play on the name of Banksy's documentary of course. Ron English, Kenny Scharf, and Robbie Conal also make a guest appearances.

PLOT: 'In order to get back at his dad, Bart goes undercover as a graffiti street artist and plasters Homer’s unflattering image all over Springfield. But one night, Bart and Milhouse get caught in the act by established street artists Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Kenny Scharf and Robbie Conal (guest voicing as themselves), and to Bart’s surprise, they invite him to exhibit his satirical artwork in his very own gallery show. Meanwhile, a hip, new health food superstore opens in Springfield that threatens to put Apu and the Kwik-E-Mart out of business.'

'Part of being on ‘The Simpsons,’ is you’re being honored as a reference point in culture,” Fairey says. But you also can’t be too sensitive about that part of culture being made fun of…There’s irony that comes with something outsider becoming insider. And they do a great job of examining that.' – Shepard
