Crafts: Homemade Atlas from Portal

After many hours of trawling the internet I had managed to grab around 50 reference images.  All of which covered multiple angles, distances, some were concept art, some were proper renders and some was even fan art (fan art can be great ref material).  It's all invaluable reference material when creating the 3D model, so it's worth spending time and getting a lot of it.  From there, I grabbed a notepad to make my plan of attack so that the model would be able to house the LEDs for the eye and the 2 elbows and I could get everything clear in my head.

I decided to make this a model that is locked in a pose rather than one that has any moving parts.  The reason for this was that I was concerned slightly about the weight on the joints of the model, as some would be quite small and thin.

Sculpture: Dark Cloud 9

"Dark Cloud 9" by Seong-Woon Shim
Source: The Creators Project
Seong-Woon Shim draws inspiration from his childhood experience of building plastic models. In his current work, one can also spy a hint of RPG games like Neon Genesis Evangelion, where humans hop onto gigantic robots which stride into the horizon. Each of Shim’s pieces resembles something you’d see in a big budget sci-fi production, and despite their immense size, each part is painstakingly detailed.

Shim’s concepts derive from the marriage between humanity and robotics. Over time, sci-fi films and animation have seen robots increasingly evolving into human forms. Seeing this as a union of the human body’s organic form and the mechanical form machinery, Shim has dubbed his method “orchanic.”

Lego Creation: Macross Veritech Fighter

Macross Veritech Fighter (VF-1 Valkyrie) by MaxVF1
This is a model suggestion for VF-1 Valkyrie; the distinguished variable fighter from the TV animation "Space fortress Macross". The Valkyrie is a highly admired pioneer of Japanese transforming robot. The first animation was broadcasted on TV back in 1982. It made a huge impact on both Japanese kids and adult fans alike with exceptional transformation capabilities of changing between the FIGHTER, GERWALK and BATTROID modes. Here I wish to recreate that same emotional ‘‘impact’’, through a single model offering that is able to transform into all 3 modes.

This is LEGO concept model of my project for LEGO CUUSOO. If I got 10,000 supports from worldwide, it will become real products. So if you interested in, and want to get the real product in your hands, Please visit LEGO CUUSOO site to sign-up, and support my project!

Sculpture: Optimus Prime in Snow

The Japanese toy company Takara Tomy commissioned this giant Optimus Prime snow sculpture for the 53rd annual Asahikawa Winter Festival in Hokkaido, Japan. It stands 53 feet tall and 427 feet wide, and it features several gigantic built-in snow slides. Several smaller Transformers snow sculptures peppered around the festival grounds, including Bumblebee. The Japan Self-Defense Forces built the various sculptures. The fireworks display in the bottom photo were shot off to close out the festival.

Lego Creation: Prosthetic Arm

The main purpose of this project was to accurately mimic the full range of motion of a normal human arm and hand. The secondary goal was to maximize speed and power, yet maintain a consistent ratio between the two for demonstration purposes. It is important to note that it was designed as an above elbow prosthesis, and the yellow shoulder is only meant to act as a static model.

The amount of weight it can lift is limited to the shape of the object and orientation of the wrist and elbow, but it can't do much with more than a couple pounds.

The controller is a rudimentary cluster of switches and joysticks. A 4-motor air compressor with pressure-regulation was made of Lego, but for the demonstration I simply used hand pumps.

Sculpture: Robuts in Repose

Robuts in Repose by Giles Walker

Part of an exhibit currently showing at RAW Art Fair, these relaxing and poledancing robots are built from industrial scraps and car parts, which are then controlled through a PC using a DMX programme. Making robots dance for your viewing pleasure seems like a fun night sure, but keep in mind that’s precisely how the Matrix started.
